New Student Checklist

The items below consolidate what every incoming student should do before or early during the first semester. Work through them in roughly this order.

  • Complete the Graduate College's New Graduate Student Orientation on Canvas.

  • Graduate Assistants: additionally complete the mandatory Graduate Assistant Orientation modules.

  • Use and regularly check your official UNLV email. Important Department, Graduate College and University correspondence arrives there. Graduate Assistants receive a work address (unlv.edu) in addition to the student address (unlv.nevada.edu); forward one to the other so nothing is missed (see Graduate Assistantships).

  • Read through every page in the Getting Started, The Program and Milestones sections of this site. Together they cover the people, requirements and timeline you will rely on throughout the program — better to see it all now than to discover it piecemeal later.

  • If anything above remains unclear, meet with the Graduate Coordinator. The Graduate Coordinator handles all program- and GA-related matters and approves your paperwork (see Your Advisor).

  • Enroll in ECO 740 in the summer term and plan your first-semester courses. Map your intended schedule against the sample plans before registration (see Courses and Sample Study Plans).

  • If admitted conditionally or provisionally, provide the Graduate Coordinator proof that the admission requirements have been met within the specified time frame.
