Most students take 2-3 courses per semester.
Classes are offered in the late afternoon or evening (after 4:00 PM).

Elective courses
Two electives are needed for the degree.
- You can take any 600-level or higher courses in economics, except for
ECO 640 and ECO 641, which are remedial courses. Depending on offerings, possible economics electives include:
- ECO 707 (Environmental Economics)
- ECO 720 (Health Economics & Policy)
- ECO 760 (International Trade)
- ECO 765 (Labor Economics)
- ECO 625 (Economic Growth)
- ECO 651 (Public Finance)
- ECO 655 (Industrial Organization)
- ECO 670 (Urban Economics), etc.
If you earned your BA/BSBA in Economics at UNLV, you cannot count a 600-level ECO course toward your electives when you have already taken its 400-level ECON counterpart (e.g., ECO 625 when having already completed ECO 425 during the undergraduate study). Consult the Graduate Coordinator to confirm which 600-level economics courses remain available to you. This warning does not apply to any 700-level ECO course.

ECO 784 (Internship) may be used as an elective, subject to the Graduate Coordinator's approval.

ECO 790 (Independent Study) may be used as an elective, subject to the Graduate Coordinator's approval. This requires a faculty member willing to supervise the student.

You can also take 600-level or above courses outside of economics, subject to the Graduate Coordinator's (pre)approval. Non-economics electives can be selected to fit your interests, including courses in Quantitative Finance, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Analytics, Computer Science, MIS, Environmental Studies, Political Science, Public Policy.

The department does not approve MBA courses as electives.
Pre-approve your choice of non-economics electives with the Graduate Coordinator.
You may complete more than two elective courses, in which case you will be able to pick any two of them (subject to the approval by the Graduate Coordinator) to count towards your degree requirements.
Be aware that many non-economics courses carry differential fees (can be over $1,000 per course).
